Part 1

Letters and Emails

Do you still write letters nowadays or do you just use email?

Obviously I don’t write letters any more as it is so old-fashioned andtakes so long to get the message to others. Besides, I believe fewer and fewerpeople write letters right now.

Can you tell me some of the major differences between writing lettersand email?

Well, one big difference between them I can think of is the speed atwhich the message is delivered. What I mean by that is the receiver can getyour message through email much faster while it will have to take at least afew days for the receiver to get the message in a letter.

What sorts of email can make you feel excited?

Well, definitely any email that contains good news can make me excitedor even thrilled. For instance, I will be so pleased to receive an email inwhich I am informed that I am officially admitted to a university I’ve beendreaming to go to.

Do you think that people will stop using letters in the future?

No, I do not think letters will become obsolete in the future, becauseit brings people a much more intimate and personal feeling when people receiveletters from their friends and families, which is something that email cannotdo.

Do you prefer to make a phone call or send an email to others?

It really depends on what matter I need to address. For instance, Iwill have to make a phone call if I need someone’s immediate attention to thematter I work on. Otherwise, I will probably just send an email as it isnothing urgent.

Part 2

Describe something you made yourself.

You should say:

What you made.

Why you make it.

How you make it.

and explain how you felt about it.

I used tomake a bamboo lantern. A lantern is a traditional handicraft in thesouthern part of China. There is a Lantern Festival right after the SpringFestival. It is the time when people make and appreciate this work ofart. In order to celebrate the festival, I made a lantern under the guidance ofmy grandfather.

The wholelantern looked like a rabbit. The frame of the lamp was made of sliced bamboo, and a bulb was placed at the bottom of the framework. And the Xuan paper waspasted onto the framework, which was painted with vivid Chinesepaintings.

I like thisbamboo lantern very much, although the color on it is a bit faded, it stilllooks beautiful when the bulb is lit up. More importantly, it contains alot of precious memories that I have with my grandfather. I hope we can protectthis traditional skill and pass on to the next generation.

Eg:Each location will host special events like handicraft conferences anddemonstrations by local artisans.

Eg:In order to appreciate the novel, one must be able to enter the spiritof the work.

Eg:The painter brushed over the canvas to bring out a more vivideffect.

Eg:Finally, we were dazzled by two high-tech garments that harness LEDsto light up the night.

Part 3

1. Why do some peopleprefer to make things themselves?

I guess it’sbecause they enjoy the process or want to have a special design. Some peopleenjoy the process of making things themselves, because it will give them asense of achievement. On the other hand, things designed and made byoneself are usually different from others, which means you can have somethingvery unique and special if you make it by yourself.

Eg:This achievement is surely unprecedented.

Eg:The real innovations are expected to come from a device finding itsown unique uses.

2. What are the majordifferences between the things you buy from a store and the thing you made allby yourself?

The firstmain difference I think is uniqueness. Things sold in a store areusually ready-made products and many people have exactly the same thingas you do. However if you make something by yourself, it will probably be theonly one in the world. Another difference is that, it’s a matter of time.Self-made products can take a long time, but if you buy things from a store,it’s fast and convenient.

Eg:This uniqueness bridges the physical and digital worlds, acceleratinginnovation, time-to-market, and market growth.

Eg:Do you have any ready-made clothes that will fit me?

3. Do you think DIYwill become more and more popular in the near future?

I don’t thinkso. Although there are many DIY shops recently, it is more like a hobby. Peoplewould like to give it a go, but will not take it seriously. With thedevelopment of technology, mass production is the main stream. It’s fastand convenient. That’s why many handicrafts fail to be handed down frompast generations because we’ve got more modern and handy alternatives.

Eg:In an age of mass production, it is a delight to visit thesefamily-owned wineries.

Eg:Particularly in Confucian societies in East Asia, people are more keento hand down the latest tools and knowledge to the next generation.

The graph below shows percentages ofdifferent types of household waste which were recycled in one city between 1992and 2002.

Summarise the information by selecting and reportingthe main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150words.

The bar chart illustrateshow much household waste was recycled in a city from 1992 to 2002, and the datais presented in percentage.

In 1992, cans, asone type of the household waste, were recycled with the largest share, whichamounts to 14%, followed by paper and glass (13% for each type), and then byplastic (10%). By 1997, the recycling rates of the waste materials such asplastic, paper, and glass all increased to varying degrees (13% for plastic, 18% forpaper, and 29% for glass), except for the cans which slightly decreased to 12%.

After 5 years, therecycling difference among these 4 waste types became more obvious. Therecycling percentage for plastic kept stable at 13%. In terms of cans, despitea marginal dropbetween 1992 and 1997, their recycling rates went up by almost 10% from 1997 to2002. It should be noted that glass and paper reuse kept increasing. Nearly onehalf of glass waste and one third of paper waste were recycled in 2002.

To conclude, plasticwaste recycling rates remained relatively steady during the decade while paper and glass wererecycled at a remarkable increasing rate. The amount of waste cans beingrecycled showed a trend of fluctuation.

②marginal:adj.微小的

③relatively: adv.

Team/group activities can teach moreimportant skills for life than those activities which are played alone. To whatextent do you agree or disagree?

Somepeople claim that we can learn more crucial skills from collective activities than individual ones. However, I believe that each way carries its own unique advantages and isequally valuable in fosteringour skills.

Undoubtedly, groupactivities play an irreplaceable role in cultivating social skills. With an emphasison cooperation, they can teach people how to work in a team. For instance, allplayers of a football team have to work closely and create a synergy in order to win a game. Asa result, the participants are enabled to meet challenges with effectiveteamwork and develop a strong team spirit, which will be conducive to theirfuture life and work. In addition, a team activity provides opportunities forpeople to socialise and communicate with each other. With these chances, theywill be able to share with each other and learn to resolve any interpersonal conflicts thatmight occur. The communication skills will then give them a competitive advantage inmodern society. Therefore, team efforts enhance core competence for people tosucceed in human society.

Nevertheless, theimportance of team activities does not overshadow the critical part of individualattempts which develop significant attributes of a person that cannot befostered otherwise. For one thing, playing activities alone allows people toconcentrate themselves. In this bustling Internet-dominant world, people areprone to be distracted bythe massive information that surround them, and some even suffer from the Attention Deficiency Syndrome. Thus, the ability to focus oneself, which is trained in one-man activities, isvital to survive in the overwhelming information society. For another, goingsolo also improves one’s independence in tackling problems. When playing in ateam, people may unconsciously rely too much on other members’ contributionsand overlook their own development. However, when you are all on your own, youare forced to confront whatever difficulties the activities may bring. Gradually, you will hopefully deal with pressure more positively and handle issues moreindependently.

Overall, people developtraits of different nature but of the same importance in teamwork as well asindividual activities, both of which should then be explored in a person’sgrowth and cultivation.

④resolve: v.

⑥overshadow: v. 使…失色

⑦be distracted by …: 被…
